Toss Conducts Full Data Center Shutdown Disaster Recovery Dril

- Active-active redundancy model used to run Internet Data Center
- Successful execution from live drill to recovery, strengthening disaster response capabilities
Viva Republica, the operator of the financial super app "Toss," announced that it has conducted a disaster recovery drill.

Toss has operated its Internet Data Centers (IDC) using an active-active redundancy model since 2018 to ensure stable service in emergencies such as earthquakes, fires, system failures, and cyberattacks. In an active-active setup, both data centers operate with identical computing resources. This approach enables faster recovery than the active-standby model, where a backup center is activated only during failures as it minimizes service disruptions.
The drill took place on October 26 (Sat) from 2 AM to 5 AM, simulating a scenario where a disaster rendered one IDC inoperable. During the exercise, one data center was completely disconnected, and operations continued solely from the other center. The drill was successfully completed with no impact on customer services, and the disconnected data center was fully restored.
“Ensuring stability is our top priority as Toss integrates over 100 services in one app, including ones from Toss Bank and Toss Securities,” a Toss representative said. “Conducting a full data center shutdown to test business continuity is something that is rarely attempted in the financial sector.”
Meanwhile, Toss is making various efforts to strengthen its response capabilities, such as holding joint emergency response drills with its affiliates for electronic financial service network disruptions, to ensure that users can safely use the app even in disaster situations.
